Nectarine and Heirloom Tomato Salad with herb ranch dressing

08-28-12 022

Nectarines and other stone fruits are everywhere right now.  Every grocery store I wander into seems to have piles of them and at great prices too.  That’s how this salad came to be.  I’ve actually had the idea of making this salad for a few weeks-even bought the ingredients numerous times.  But life gets in the way sometimes…and family members eat the ingredients.  Really son?  I could never get you to try a nectarine before and now you eat two.  Oh well, at least he now likes nectarines. After getting my ingredients this time and fiercly protecting them from prying hands and … Continue reading

Blood Orange and Mixed Greens Salad with blood orange vinaigrette

Blood Orange and Mixed Greens Salad with blood orange vinaigrette

I love roaming my local Farmers’ Market sampling and smelling the best the local growers have to offer.  Fresh produce, breads, nuts and cheeses entice you to taste everything.  Most of the time I know what’s going to be offered; fantastic dandelion greens and pea shoots from one booth and every kind of tomato imaginable from another.  But sometimes I spot something I wasn’t expecting.  As I walked down to the end of the first row of booths, a small stand was set up with nothing but some ugly looking oranges and bottles of a red juice.  Immediately I knew what they were, blood oranges.  Normally we don’t see … Continue reading

Grilled Romaine Salad with Chipotle Caesar Dressing

Grilled Romaine Salad with Chipotle Caesar Dressing

As I’ve stated before, Caesar salad is one of my all time favorites and grilling anything in the summer is one of my favorites things to do.  So combining two of my favorites was a natural.  Grilling romaine quickly over high heat leaves wonderful char marks on the outside leaves and gives it a natural smokiness and the addition of grilled tomatoes along with the spiciness of the chipotles in the dressing compliment perfectly.  If you haven’t tried grilling lettuce, you’re in for a treat.  Enjoy! I started by making the dressing.  I my blender I combined 5 garlic cloves, … Continue reading

Citrus grilled chicken salad with Salsalina dressing

Citrus Grilled Chicken Salad with Salsalina dressing

As I was typing away yesterday, it hit me that I hadn’t made an entreé size salad in quite some time .  I don’t know why I haven’t made one lately; we used to eat salad only for dinner almost once a week.  Perhaps I just got bored with them or more probably  I thought creating a different type of dinner recipe was more enticing.  Whatever my reasoning for being remiss, it was time to have salad again for dinner.  The more I thought about it, the better it sounded. Now the question became-what kind?  Caesar?  Always a favorite of mine, but not this time.  … Continue reading

FYB Potato Salad

FYB Potato Salad

With all the grilling that’s been going on I’ve been remiss in mentioning the side dishes that complete the perfect backyard barbecue.  I posted my Mac N Cheese (see archives) recipe but hadn’t posted my potato salad.  I had always found potato salad kinda boring and bland; it just didn’t do much for me.  I have tried so many over the years at the urging of this person and that person promising it to be THE BEST potato salad ever from Great Aunt Fannie’s old family recipe.  “Feel that crunch in your mouth? That’s the secret ingredient…waterchestnuts.”  Bleh.  So awhile back I set … Continue reading

Bone-in Ribeyes with grilled Mediteranean vegetable salad

Grilled Bone-in Ribeyes with Ken's custom rub

Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer and the kickoff of the barbecue and grilling season.  Here in Southern California we’re fortunate to have just a little bit better weather than most year round.  Alright, we have fantastic weather compared to most throughout the year.  Even though I do grill in the winter, braving the frigid 60 degree weather in my shorts and t-shirt, when it hits Memorial Day there’s just something different about it.  The sun is shining, the days are longer and…oh what the heck does it matter!  It’s a perfect chance to get outside with family and … Continue reading
